In Puerto Vallarta, sunset is a plan all on its own: the sun sets right in front of the bay, and the sky turns from gold to pink within minutes. The rooftops of the Zona Romántica are the best place to watch it, and here's how to get it right.
What time to arrive
In winter the sun sets around 6:00 PM, and in summer around 8:00 PM. The rule that always works is to arrive an hour early: you'll get a table, catch the full change of light, and stick around for the blue hour, which is usually the best part.
What to look for in a good rooftop
West-facing, with no buildings blocking the view; shade until the sun drops; a short, well-executed menu; and music at conversation volume. A rooftop with a pool adds up to a full afternoon plan, not just a quick drink.
Amaca's rooftop
Ours sits above the Zona Romántica, with a pool, loungers, a palapa, and open views of the bay. The pool is open from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM and the bar from 2:00 to 10:00 PM, Tuesday through Sunday, with Happy Hour from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. It's a quiet, adults-only space.

Not staying with us: Day Pass
You can spend the afternoon on the rooftop with our Day Pass for $350 MXN per person, from 2:00 to 10:00 PM, which includes pool access, a towel, and a welcome drink. It's the easiest way to watch the sunset from above even if your hotel is in another part of town.
Final tips
Book ahead for high-season weekends, bring something light and long-sleeved for the evening breeze, and stay past sunset: once the neighborhood lights come on, the view changes completely.
