01 · A beach day at Los Muertos
Playa Los Muertos is the Zona Romantica's main beach and the heart of the neighborhood: sand, gentle waves, vendors, music and loungers by the sea. In the morning it's calm and good for swimming; by afternoon the beach clubs bring it to life. It's a few minutes' walk from almost anywhere in the neighborhood.
02 · Photograph the iconic pier
The Los Muertos Pier, with its white sail that looks like a lighthouse, is the most photographed postcard in Puerto Vallarta. By day it's a great lookout over the bay; at night it lights up and the walk around it fills with life. It's also the departure point for boats to the southern beaches.
03 · Start the day with coffee in Olas Altas
The Olas Altas is the neighborhood's gastronomic and social axis. This is where the specialty coffee shops, brunch spots and terraces for watching the morning go by are. It's the ideal place to start the day with good coffee before a walk.
Local tip: on weekdays and before 10 a.m. tables are easy to find; on weekends brunch in Olas Altas fills up.
04 · Spend the afternoon at a beach club
In front of Los Muertos you'll find beach clubs for every style, from laid-back to Mantamar, the most famous beach club in the city's gay-friendly scene, with a pool, music and a party atmosphere. Order a lounger and a drink and stay all afternoon.
05 · Cross the Cuale River and its island
The Cuale River separates the Zona Romantica from downtown, and in its middle runs a small pedestrian island full of greenery, stalls, cafés and footbridges. It's a green break in the middle of the city and a perfect short walk for mid-morning.
06 · Shop at the craft market
Next to the river is the Rio Cuale Municipal Marketwith Mexican crafts, textiles, silver, souvenirs and haggling included. It's the place to take home something authentic without paying hotel prices.
07 · Explore galleries and Huichol art

09 · Eat tacos and street food
You can't leave the Zona Romantica without tacos. Between Olas Altas, Basilio Badillo and the surrounding streets there are stands and taquerías with al pastor, fish, birria and fresh seafood. Real food, cheap and delicious.
10 · Treat yourself to fine dining
On the same block where you eat tacos you can dine in style. The Basilio Badillo and its surroundings are home to chef-driven restaurants and international cuisine that place Vallarta among Mexico's best food destinations.
11 · Enjoy the most inclusive nightlife
As night falls, the Zona Romantica lights up. It's the city's most LGBT+ and most inclusive neighborhood, with bars, terraces, cabarets and clubs for every beat. From a quiet drink to dancing until dawn, everyone is welcome.
12 · Stroll the Malecón
A few minutes across the river begins the Malecónthe pedestrian seaside promenade full of sculptures, street artists, lookouts and bars. Walking it end to end at sunset is a classic Puerto Vallarta must.
13 · Shop local and design
Beyond the market, the neighborhood has boutiques, Mexican design stores, mezcal bars and artisan chocolate shops. Perfect for wandering aimlessly and taking home something different from an airport souvenir.
14 · Take a boat to the southern beaches

15 · See whales (December to March)
If you travel in winter, Banderas Bay fills with humpback whales. Whale watching tours depart very close to the neighborhood, and if you're lucky you'll see them breach right from the beach. It's one of the most memorable experiences of the season.
